Pesticide Prohibition of Olive Oil

By Rob Sutter

Olive oil is one of those components which you can put money into and expect certain things out of it. You can assume that it will be healthful for you in comparison to the slew of other oils in existence. You can also make the claim that it can be just as useful for cooking as it is to consume as it is. It's clear that this substance is rather popular but when something like pesticides seem to be found within it, suddenly it doesn't seem to be worth it any longer.

According to the one article that I had read on the Olive Oil Times, it seems as though this particular item had seen instances of pesticides within it. A total of 98 shipping containers of the Italian extra virgin variety arrived on the ports of New York and Seattle and that's where the detection began. As you could probably imagine, this synthetic substance cannot be used in the production of this oil in the United States. I'm sure that this story can raise the ire of authorities like Unaprol.

This isn't to say that the instances of pesticides were insurmountable but the truth is that they were still present. The article spoke about them, saying that they fell between the minimum levels between 0.015 and 0.020 ppm. The maximum level is set at 0.250 ppm, so while the aforementioned range isn't quite up there, it's still something that stands as a law. When you're talking about rules concerning food, I would like to think that they are more important than most others.

The oil is currently detained, which I cannot imagine is going over very well with people. There are many people who enjoy this oil quite a bit. There are a number of fans who like it and I think that there are a number of reasons as to why this is. For example, people may enjoy cooking with it as opposed to just about any other type of oil, which means that people are going to have to turn to others, perhaps less healthy, means to cook.

In the end, I think you have to place blame on those which have bottled and carted out the olive oil. After all, it went through them and I think it was up to them in order to inspect if it was good enough to be shipped out. It seems like a job was not done effectively and I think that when repeated instances of this come about, consequences should be met. However, this seems to be the first case in recent memory, so we can only hope that matters improve over the course of time.
